The key points in brief

We plan your heat pump in Mannheim and the Rhine-Neckar region to your heating load (the heat your house needs on the coldest days), coordinate the specialist companies and support the funding application. You get one contact and one fixed price.

In short: Quote within 48 hours of the on-site visit. 6 weeks from order confirmation to handover, for a standard system, secured delivery and funding approval in place. Basic grant from the state development bank KfW: 30 percent, plus 16 percent for owner-occupiers replacing an old oil or gas heating system who apply by 31 January 2027. As of October 2026, without guarantee. Source: KfW fact sheet 458.

Air-to-water heat pump in an older building: when it fits

Often, yes. In the field test by the Fraunhofer ISE research institute, outdoor-air heat pumps in buildings from 1826 to 2001 reached an average seasonal performance factor of 3.3: from 1 kilowatt hour of electricity they produced 3.3 kilowatt hours of heat over the year. What matters is the heating load of your house, not its age.

Calculate the heating load

We work out how much heat your house needs on cold days. That sets the output and size of the unit.

Check the radiators

Heat pumps run most efficiently at a low flow temperature, meaning cooler heating water. We check whether your radiators can work with that.

Take insulation and windows into account

If insulation or new windows lower the heating load, a smaller unit is enough. We coordinate such work from a single source, more under our services.

Heat pump or district heating in Mannheim: what suits your street?

That depends on whether MVV, Mannheim’s utility, can connect your house to the district heating network. We check both routes and put the district heating quote next to our fixed price.

Mannheim’s city council adopted the municipal heat planning on 12 March 2024 (source: official gazette of the City of Mannheim).

Funding note: KfW also funds connection to a district heating network. If a municipality requires connection by bylaw (a mandatory connection and use requirement, “Anschluss- und Benutzungszwang”), KfW funds only that network connection, not an individual heating system. We clarify whether this applies to your address before the quote. As of October 2026, source: KfW fact sheet 458.

How much does a heat pump cost in Mannheim?

That depends on heating load, unit, location, radiators and electrical work, so we do not quote flat prices. You receive a fixed-price quote within 48 hours of the on-site visit. Work you have to provide on site is listed separately in the quote, everything else is included.

These items belong in a complete quote

  • Foundation or base for the outdoor unit
  • Electrical connection and registration with the grid operator
  • Hydraulic balancing (adjusting the heating circuit so every radiator gets the right flow), radiator check and, where needed, radiator replacement
  • Disposal of the old heating system

Instalments and payment dates are stated in the quote.

For context: The Verbraucherzentrale Rheinland-Pfalz (consumer advice centre of Rhineland-Palatinate) analysed 160 heat pump quotes. Prices ranged from around 20,000 to over 60,000 euros. Only about a quarter were complete, and about 90 percent left out radiator replacement.

You apply as the owner in the KfW portal “Meine KfW” before the project begins. We make the contract conditional on KfW approval and guide you through the application.

According to the co2online funding database, the City of Mannheim offers a grant for heating replacement (“Heizungserneuerung”). We check for you whether it is currently available. Apartment buildings have their own funding levels and need a resolution of the owners’ association before the application, more for property managers.

Placement and noise protection in densely built areas

The outdoor unit needs free airflow and must not disturb the neighbours. For terraced houses, courtyards and narrow plots, we settle location and noise protection before we choose a unit.

What we clarify at the on-site visit

  • Location: The unit gets free airflow and does not stand at bedroom windows or neighbours’ windows. Where there is no room outside, we check placing it inside the house.
  • Noise: Guideline values apply at the neighbour’s window, stricter ones at night than during the day. We then choose unit and location and, where needed, plan noise protection.
  • Coordination: We clarify whether neighbours, the owners’ association or the authorities need to be involved.

Combine a heat pump with solar PV

With solar PV, part of the electricity for heating comes from your own roof. We design heat pump and system together, more on solar PV in Mannheim.

Your own electricity instead of grid electricity

According to the Verbraucherzentrale, every kilowatt hour you use yourself saves 30 to 40 cents (as of September 2025).

Cooling in summer

Reversible heat pumps can also cool, which makes particular sense with your own solar power (KfW Energy Transition Barometer 2026).

How your project runs: 6 weeks from order confirmation to handover

From order confirmation to handover we plan 6 weeks, for a standard system, secured delivery and, where needed, funding approval in place.

  1. On-site visit

We survey the house, radiators and location, and clarify funding and district heating.

  2. Fixed-price quote

It is with you within 48 hours, and work you provide on site is listed separately.

  3. Order and funding application

The contract is conditional on KfW approval, and you submit the application before work begins.

  4. Execution in 6 weeks

Qualified, registered specialist companies carry out the work, and we coordinate delivery, appointments and the grid operator.

  5. Handover and maintenance

We hand over the system together with you and remain your contact, including for annual maintenance.

Frequently asked questions about heat pumps in Mannheim

Will a heat pump work in my older building with radiators?

Often, yes. In the Fraunhofer ISE field test (buildings from 1826 to 2001), outdoor-air heat pumps reached an average seasonal performance factor of 3.3 (as of March 2024). The heating load calculation shows whether it fits your house.

How much funding can I get for a heat pump?

The state development bank KfW pays a 30 percent basic grant. Owner-occupiers replacing an old oil or gas heating system get a further 16 percent if they apply by 31 January 2027. Depending on income, up to 70 percent is possible, in individual cases 80 percent, based on eligible costs of at most 28,000 euros. As of October 2026, without guarantee. Source: KfW fact sheet 458.

Do I have to replace my heating because of the new law?

No. The Building Modernisation Act (GModG) has applied since 29 July 2026, and the former 65 percent renewable energy requirement has been dropped. From 2029, new oil and gas heating systems need rising shares of biofuels, and the CO2 price comes on top. Source: GModG information portal of the federal government, as of October 2026.
